Maps 1.8.9 for iPad – View maps at High Magnification

Sidney (BC) Canada – Corporate Smalltalk Consulting has announced Maps 1.8.9 for iPad, an update to their Navigation app that provides an advanced document viewer that accommodates highly detailed documents at high magnifications. Maps with its proprietary LargeViewer technology allows rapid scrolling and minimal drawing lag times for large charts and massive PDF documents.

Ordinary iPad document viewers slow to a crawl or simply crash and scrolling is extremely difficult when working with large maps or completely give up when dealing with wall maps. Maps has been specifically designed to provide effortless, real-time scrolling both horizontally and vertically, and quick zooms in and out. The app features TIFF, PDF, and Dropbox download compatibility, quick-view thumbnails, multi-tasking support, and either iOS and/or OS X based pre-rendering.

Employing accelerated PDF viewing logic, combined with CSC’s newest TIFF decoder, it facilitates the pre-rendering of files into LargeViewer format. All pre-rendering need be done only once; thereafter, converted files may be opened and viewed easily. While pre-rendering can be done within the app, CSC recommends their free, Mac OS X LargeViewer Helper for batch pre-rendering. Pre-rendering is done at 2x, but users can render finely detailed charts at 5x, enabling instant zooming in at 40x magnification.

Feature Highlights:
* Innovative document viewer accommodates highly detailed maps
* Maps allows display of image documents up to wall size posters
* Reads over 50 different image file formats, and many MS office formats
* Displays and paginates large PDF files, up to thousands of pages
* Support for TIFF/FAX files with variable page sizes
* Dropbox file download compatibility
* Acts like a USB memory stick
* Responsive H/V scrolling and zooming through large documents
* Sophisticated Cache Manager allows user control of cached Dropbox files
* Supports multi-tasking, allowing pre-processing to be done in the background
* Improved logic for dealing with multi-page PDF books

A major convenience feature of Maps is its Dropbox compatibility. The app has read-only Dropbox capability; it will never change or delete a Dropbox stored file. In addition, the app provides a sophisticated Cache Manager. This gives users complete control over files that have been stored in cache memory, allowing mirroring and later use of the Dropbox folder, even when there is no Internet connectivity.

Device Requirements:
* iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
* iOS 5.0 or later
* 13.1 MB

Pricing and Availability:
Maps 1.8.9 is $4.99 (USD) and available worldwide through the App Store in the Navigation category. Review copies are available upon request.

Well Logs 1.8.9 for iOS – View Xtra-Large PDF/TIFF Oil Well and Mud Log

Sidney (BC), Canada – Corporate Smalltalk Consulting Ltd has announced Well Logs 1.8.9 for iPad, an update to their unique app for the petroleum industry that enables viewing of extremely large Well and Mud Logs in either PDF or TIFF formats. Capable of displaying documents as big as 11 inches by 100 feet at 230 dpi, the app relies upon proprietary technology from its LargeViewer app to import, store, pre-render, tile, scale, and scroll very large images on any iOS device, there is no reliance on backend services or internet access required for viewing your well log.

Well Logs is the only iOS app on the market to have the capabilities to load and view oil & gas wireline well log TIFF and/or PDF images. With wireline well files up to dozens of feet long, most apps do not have the capacity to allow such images to load without crashing. Well Logs has made it a priority to specifically handle such unwieldy files. Of course, the advantages of viewing well logs that are 17 inches x 65 feet, or land maps that are 4 x 18 feet on an iPad rather than a paper document are significant. On-site viewing and discussion of paper documents no longer presents the inconvenience it once was, plus this reduces costs associated with the original printing process as paper and ink are costly items.

Well logging, also known as borehole logging, is the practice of making a detailed record (a well log) of the geologic formations penetrated by a borehole. The log may be based either on visual inspection of samples brought to the surface (geological logs) or on physical measurements made by instruments lowered into the hole (geophysical logs). Well logging is done during all phases of a well’s development: drilling, completing, producing, and abandoning. Well logging is commonly used to document the presence of oil and gas, groundwater, minerals, and geothermal sources, as well as during the process of conducting environmental and geotechnical studies.

Feature Highlights:
* Designed especially for the petroleum industry to view large Well and Mud Logs on iPad
* Capable of displaying documents as big as 11 x 770 inches at 230 dpi
* Uses LargeViewer technology to import, store, pre-render, tile, scale, and scroll very large images on any iOS device
* Handles Land Map files 4 x 18 feet (or larger)
* 8x zoom, horizontal & vertical scrolling
* Advanced memory management permits display of images over 640 megapixels in size
* Pre-rendering allows smooth scrolling and display
* Cached Dropbox support.
* Accelerated multi-page PDF & TIFF fax file reading for support faxes and PDF documentation
* Supports more than 35 different graphics file formats

In addition to well logs, the app also provides accelerated multi-page PDF & TIFF fax file reading, plus compatibility with all of the image formats supported by Corporate Smalltalk Consulting Ltd’s LargeViewer technology: AVS, BMP, CUR, DIB, FITS, GIF, ICON, JNG, JP2, JPEC, JPEG, JPG, MAT, MIFF, MTV, MVG, PBM, PCX, PGM, PICT, PIX, PNG, PNG8, PNG24, PNG32, PNM, PPM, RLE, SGI, TGA, TIFF, TIF, TIM, VIFF, WBMP, WPG, SBM, and XPM.

“I know of no other iOS app that can successfully manage the strenuous demands that are made on mobile devices in displaying well logs and mud logs,” commented company Founder John McIntosh. “If you are involved in borehole logging of any kind, Well Logs is a must-have app.”

Device Requirements:
* iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
* iOS 5 ready
* 9.7 MB

Pricing and Availability:
Well Logs 1.8.9 is $19.99 (USD) and available worldwide through the App Store in the Business category. Review copies are available upon request.

Accent for Mac and iPad – Accented Characters and Symbols

Tokyo, Japan – Jason Fuerstenberg today is pleased to announce Accent 1.1, a simple way for translators, developers, web designers or anybody to quickly find and copy accented characters and symbols on the Mac and iPad. Prior to Accent it was easier to find such characters on Windows than it was on a Mac. Despite the Mac’s noted role in the publishing industry, OS X was always missing an application such as Accent. No longer!

With Accent there is no need to search online or even type the name of the character you want. On the Mac simply hover the mouse cursor over a character and buttons for copying the character and its URL escape code (for developers/designers) will appear. On the iPad, simply tap a character to accomplish the same thing.

Accent provides accented characters found in French, Portuguese and Spanish as well as mathematical, corporate and currency related symbols. Accent Version 1.1 sports a new icon, localized to Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish as well as minor optimizations.

Device Requirements:
* Mac (OS X 10.7 or later), iPad (iOS 5.0 or later)
* 0.1 MB

Pricing and Availability:
Accent 1.1 is only 99 cents US (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store and Mac App Store in the Productivity category.

my Travel Assistant – temporary price drop & upcoming version

Budapest, Hungary – The Gamma Project has announced they are temporarily dropping the price of my Travel Assistant, their popular productivity / travel app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices. my Travel Assistant is a professional app for global travelers that integrates into a single, convenient package a smart, multi-currency expense tracker with automatic currency conversion, a 156-currency monetary exchange rate converter and a 51-language translator. The sale ends once the update appears in the AppStore.

The upcoming major update brings several enhancements:

* Ability to share application data among devices – Easily share trips between all your devices or backup application data to your desktop computer.

* Localized number formatting – All numbers will appear nicely formatted based on your device’s settings.

* User Interface improvements – The app now provides a more unified user experience. The app’s main color scheme is applied to all UIs. Additionally, a new calendar has been introduced which makes it easier to quickly select or update the date of trips and trip items.

Designed as an intelligent assistant for international travelers, the app stores all expenses in both the local and converted, home currencies. With a high-end, dark wood-grain GUI, the app includes no instructions for use; all operations are intuitive and trouble-free. One-time set-up includes entering the user’s language, home currency, and the frequency of exchange rate updates. The designers have paid great attention to human factors.

For example, English, Spanish, French, Italian and German appear in their respective places in the scrolling list that appears by touching “Your Language”, but the group of five most common languages also appears at the head of the list. Similarly, the app defaults to US dollars, with the yen, euro, swiss francs, british pounds and Canadian dollar leading an alphabetical list of 156 different currencies.

Set-up complete, the home page displays four buttons: Travel Expenses, Currency Converter, Translator, and Quick Add. A summary of the last expense is also shown on the main screen for convenience. The quick add function allows fast expense entry, and goes straight to the entry page of the last trip.

Travel Expenses is the heart of the app, and the Travel Expenses page contains an artfully designed scrolling list of all trips ordered by date by default. The order of trips and expense items can be customized. The user may substitute any photo or graphic for the generic icon displayed with each travel expense listing, which includes the trip’s label (i.e. the country or city), the description of the expense (e.g. work, personal, etc.), the date and the total amount of all expenses, automatically converted to the user’s home currency.

Selecting any entry brings up an itemized listing of each individual expense for that particular trip. When entering an expense in the local currency the user may enter a description using the pop-up alphanumeric keyboard, or choose a predefined category. Included, with appropriate icons, are: Transportation (Flight), Cash Withdrawal, Taxi, Local Transportation, Hotel, Camping, Fuel, Road Tolls, Souvenirs, Food & Drink, Treatment (Hospital), Shopping, Entertainment, Additional Fees, and Other. Sums are entered using the built-in, multi-function calculator. Both the trips and the expenses scrolling list is fully editable, and displays individual expenses in both local and home currencies, plus the date and description. Expense items also display the corresponding category.

The currency converter function features side-by-side odometer displays for going from any one of 156 currencies to another. The large entry keypad also includes a calculator function. Results are displayed in the dual odometer highlight window with the currency listing. For example, entering 1,555 displays “Japanese Yen – 1,555 JPY” on the left cylinder, and “US Dollars – 20.202 USD” on the right.

The translator function employs two text fields, each with a labeled flag beside it. The user selects his native language/flag and enters the word or phrase to be translated in the text field. The translator supports copy and paste functionality, allowing translation of eMails or web content. Selecting any of 51 languages displays the translation in red type in the second text field.

Feature Highlights:
* Retina Display Ready – for both the iPhone and the new iPad
* Universal app – get it once and run it at full resolution on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad
* Analytics view on the iPad version, showing on what types of services is the most money spent
* Appealing, user friendly interface with Retina Display support (high resolution)
* Easy-to-use expense management at home and abroad – no matter what foreign currencies have been used – even if multiple currencies have been used during the same travel
* Organize expenses by topic for specific categories, trips or projects
* Use custom photos as thumbnails for itemized expenses (take photos or load images from your photos library)
* Easily edit, reorder or delete trips and entries
* Use custom photos as trip thumbnails
* Automatic conversion between the type of currency paid and the user’s native currency
* Share expenses via in-app, eMail function as a nicely formatted table and as CSV attachment; The csv file can then be loaded into spreadsheet applications for further processing
* Universal currency converter supporting 156 currencies
* Translate words and phrases between 51 languages, with “copy and paste” support
* Built-in Calculator
* Auto-refresh of exchange rates (configurable interval from 1 hour to 1 week, or manual)
